It also worked out that we did a birthday jam for Gayl last night because I happen to think that “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” is a fantastic birthday jam number.

I think with a bit of tweaking I could get a pretty good set together for Mardi Gras. I ended up switching the set around a bit to help keep the energy going in the room so the final set list I posted below doesn’t quite match how I had it.

Oh, and did you know that Tucson Swings is playing at Armory Park tonight?

But really, we basically had a dance every week in town as it was, now we’re just located at the same venue on the same night every week to make it easier.

So in short, don’t go to 520 Swing on Saturday, go to Warehouse on Friday.

I thought it would be fun to start posting my set lists from every time I DJ.  There are a few artists that I’m really into right now so you’ll see them appear multiple times on the set.  Once I figure out a quick way to export play lengths and BPM I’ll start posting that too.

I just wanted to give a heads up that we will not be having 520 Swing this December (as in years past) simply due to the proximity of the holidays and lots of people leaving town.

We’re excited to be hosting our first ever live band at 520 Swing in August.  The Hot Club of Phoenix is no stranger to playing for dancers having appeared at Al Moro in Phoenix and at the Albuquerque Lindy Exchange. Known for playing gypsy jazz in the style of the great jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt, they are sure to keep you dancing the whole night!

Caitlin (our new President) was also mentioning for those of you who want to continue dancing over summer break, that we are going to possibly try and hold an off campus meeting of swing cats over the summer this year! But we’ll update you when all the details are set in stone!

It was a great first run–we even got to throw down in an epic Charleston battle with the Breaking Boundaries kids from Skrappy’s. Can’t wait to do this again!

Hailing from East Los Angeles, Neil
Figuracion began studying theater and movement while at UC Santa Barbara. He
discovered Lindy Hop by accident and nothing has been the same since. He has
learned from international champions and has put in his time with the
old-timers in Southern California. Neil has been a formative member of the Los
Angeles Lindy Hop scene since the late twentieth century. He has taught Lindy
Hop on both coasts and many parts in between and someday may teach swing on the
moon! Neil is also one of the innovators behind the Twister Yoga craze and
plans to knit a J.R. “Bob” Dobbs sweater some time in the next
decade.

Frances “Fancy” Dougherty was born and raised
in Van Nuys, California, and enjoys guitars, foreign languages, bubbles and a
great swing out. In her dancing career, she has performed with bands such as
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Captain Jeffrey and his Musical Chumbuckets. She has
also been featured in recent productions such as Lee Ann Rimes’ grammy
nominated music video “Swingin,” and Paula Abdul’s ‘Live To Dance’ show.
Competitively, she has carved her place in the scene with wins in fast lindy
and the Camp Hollywood Collegiate Shag Championships. Her other talents as an
Olympic sleeper, criminal mastermind and aquatic singer are currently on hold,
as lindy hop has stolen her heart.

Together, Neil and Fancy teach the
LindyGroove Technique Class in Pasadena, CA. Their partnership is much like
that fateful night when the Flying Graysons were shot and Batman met Robin.
